Ronald Lanier, Retired African-American Nassau County Correction Officer, Files Notice of Claim for Violations and Civil Rights Law Abuses by the Village of Garden City Police Department and for Their False Arrest, Racial Discrimination, Verbal and Physical Abuse

Retired Correction Officer Ronald Lanier, who is an African-American and a 22½-year veteran of the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department, was joined by members of several law enforcement and community groups to announce the filing of his Notice of Claim for his vicious physical abuse, wrongful treatment, violations of his Constitutional rights, false arrest and abuse at the hands of Garden City Village police officers. Frederick K. Brewington, Mr. Lanier’s attorney, held a press conference at his office on December 2 to announce the filing.

The mistreatment of Mr. Lanier by the officers will be the subject of the lawsuit, claiming violations of New York State law and Federal Laws 42 U.S.C. §§ 1981, 1983, and others. The Garden City police negligently, wantonly, recklessly, intentionally and knowingly sought to and did wrongfully deprive Plaintiff of terms, conditions and privileges of his status as a citizen, through unlawful abuse of process, misinformation, character assassination, assault and battery.

On November 30, 2016, Mr. Lanier was accosted by members of the Garden City Police Department while shopping in the Western Beef Supermarket in Mineola. He was cursed at, aggressively handled, thrown to the ground, abused verbally and subjected to unreasonable and excessive force by Garden City police, who refused to believe that he had done nothing wrong and was a retired officer of the law. He was approached by no fewer than four officers who hurled insults at him and acted in an insulting and demeaning manner while they exhibited an uncontrolled level of aggression and a vindictive nature.

After holding Mr. Lanier against his will, the police realized they had arrested the wrong Black man. Then, without apology or any sense of remorse, the officers told Mr. Lanier to go. Even when Mr. Lanier showed a sergeant his badge and credentials, he was not treated with respect or any sense of dignity.

On December 4, Mr. Brewington joined Mr. Lanier and community and civil rights leaders in a march from Western Beef to the Garden City police headquarters to protest the police officers’ treatment of Mr. Lanier. At the rally, Mr. Brewington called for the officers involved to be fired.
