On July 17, the New York State Division of Human Rights made a determination that Frederick K. Brewington’s client, Adan Abreu, was discriminated by his employer, Verizon, on the basis of his race. Mr. Abreu, who spent 25 years as a Core Field Technician, said he did not want to wear the shirt because he did not want to bring poison ivy home to his family and instead decided to wear a tank top. Mr. Abreu also noted the white employees who worked on Fire Island did not wear their shirts and some of them violated other company policies, but were never disciplined or transferred.
