On November 27, 2018, a federal judge ruled that the Village of Garden City must pay $5.3 million in attorney’s fees and other costs related to a housing discrimination lawsuit which the village lost both at the federal level an upon appeal. In Mhany Management Inc. v. Village of Garden City, the Plaintiffs (Mhany Management Inc. and New York Communities for Change) charged that a new zoning law implemented by the village discriminated against Latinos and African-Americans, thereby violating the Fair Housing Act. In 2013, the U.S. District Court ruled in favor of the Plaintiffs. The village appealed the decision; in 2016, the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the lower court’s decision.
