Remembering NYS Court of Appeals Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam
On April 12, Hon. Sheila Abdus-Salaam, an Associate Judge with the New York State Court of Appeals, passed away. She was the first African-American woman to be appointed to the New York State Court of Appeals.
A graduate of Columbia Law School, Judge Abdus-Salaam started as a staff attorney with East Brooklyn Legal Services. She was elected to the New York State Supreme Court in 1993 and, in 2013, was appointed to the New York State Court of Appeals by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Fred Brewington of The Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington first worked with Judge Abdus-Salaam on a grassroots campaign during the 1980s. He also argued cases before her at the appellate level and when she served in the lower court.
“I was privileged to know Justice Sheila Abdus-Salaam, not only as a judge, but as a person,” Mr. Brewington said. “We at the firm are saddened to learn of her passing, which is a loss to us all. She was a wonderful and brilliant person and she will definitely be missed.”
