African-American Salesman for Garden City Jeep Dealer Threatened at Gunpoint
On July 29, 2016, Marc Daniel Jean and his attorney, Frederick K. Brewington, held a press conference at The Law Offices of Frederick K. Brewington to disclose the particulars of a harrowing experience which occurred at Mr. Jean’s place of employment.
Mr. Jean, a car salesman at Garden City Jeep Chrysler Dodge, was threatened by a manager with a gun during an office meeting. At the press conference, he quoted his manager as saying, “Does this look familiar to you?” while the manager pointed the gun in Mr. Jean’s direction. Hempstead police were called; although the manager was arrested for possession of a firearm, the police did not believe the incident was racially motivated.
At the press conference, Mr. Brewington announced that he will file a lawsuit on behalf of Mr. Jean, claiming his workplace rights were violated. He will also demand an apology from the three auto manufacturers, as well as the dealership.
Mr. Jean, who is 22 years old, made the following statement:
"I am a Sales Associate at Garden City Jeep Chrysler Dodge on North Franklin Street in Hempstead. Over the past year, I have shown that I am a good worker and an excellent salesman. Honestly, I love my job and the people I get to serve as a salesman.
"Today, I was subjected to treatment by my General Sales Manager that has shaken me to my core and it is something that I must speak about. Violence, threats of violence and racism have no place at all in our society, but clearly have no place in the workplace. Today, my General Sales Manager pointed a real gun in my face and made comments that were not only outrageous, but clearly filled with racial overtones. While pointing a gun in my face, he said, 'Does this look familiar?' and then, talking to the other people in the room, he said, 'He knows I don’t like him, that is why I am not doing this to Matt.' I was in fear for my life and, at that moment, all the other past comments that he had made to me and others that were clearly racist made me understand what I was facing. I called the police, who arrested him.
"Guns have no place on the job, violence has no place on the job and racist comments and talk have no place on the job. I want others to know that they should speak up when things like this happen. He had no right to treat me like I don’t have rights and, if I don’t speak up now, it could happen again and again. This must stop. Black lives matter."
The supervisor who pointed the gun at Mr. Jean has been arrested on felony charges. Mr. Brewington is working on this case for the firm.
